Alcohol Focus Scotland has launched an updated toolkit on how alcohol licensing works, along with practical tips to help people get involved. The new guidance includes enhanced tools, resources, and hyperlinks to important reference materials for easy access.
Licensing plays a vital role in regulating alcohol sales to protect communities, and Community Councils have a statutory role within this system. Licensing boards are required by law to consult with Community Councils on licensing matters that affect your area, and this toolkit can help ensure your voice is heard during these consultations.
The toolkit is designed to be a practical guide for both community councillors and individual residents who want to understand and influence local licensing decisions. It includes:
- A clear explanation of the licensing system
- Tips for engaging in the process, such as submitting objections to licensing applications
- Guidance on how to influence the development of local licensing policies
- Links to additional resources and key documents
As a community council, you are well-placed to promote and use this toolkit within your area. This toolkit can empower people to understand their rights and participate in shaping policies around alcohol sales in their communities.
Alcohol Focus Scotland are also keen to hear from you about any alcohol-related issues affecting your area and your council’s involvement in the licensing system. If you’d be interested in having someone from AFS attend a community council meeting or participating in an event about alcohol licensing, please contact them at involvement@alcohol-focus-scotland.org.uk.
